Just What I Needed(By CARS)

Just What I Needed
by the Cars

transcribed by Jeff Elkins

I'm not quite sure about any sort of intro - I guess
you need to listen to the album for that. Also, I have
to comment that when I really sat down and listened to
these songs (way back when), I was amazed that they used
so many "country" licks. Check out "Best Friends Girl"
- most of the band (excepting Mr. Orr the bass player)
came from Berkley College in Boston where they were
music/composition majors. TRIVIA: They started out as
a band in a small bar in Boston called The Rat.

See the end for performance notes.

* = fretted note
@ = add for full chord

The 5 on the chord really only indicates the lack of a
"3rd" step note. When the 5 is indicated, I still fret
the full chord with my left hand, but I mute/muffle the
x'd notes with my right palm (or left index finger).
When the song calls for the chord (without the 5) play
all of the _fretted_ notes.

VERSE 2:

I don't mind you hanging out
And talking in your sleep
It doesn't matter where you've been
As long as it was deep, yeah
I always knew you very well, and
You look so fancy I can tell...
I don't mind you hanging out
And talking in your sleep

CHORUS:

more "Rik Okasic" thrown in... memory fails slightly!)

Performance notes:

The "Riffs" could be being played by Eliot Easton on
keyboards, but I saw the Cars play this song on HBO (or
somewhere), and the guitarist had a guitar synth... and
appeared to be playing all of the riffs and lead. Mr.
Ocasic plays the rhythm guitar very muffled through the
verses, and "brash" in the chorus [see notations for
short/staccato (.) and long/legato (-) above the chords];
Mr. Orr is playing 8th note bass lines - pretty much just
following the chords. See above Riff 1 for the strumming
pattern of the rhythm guitar. The following is (I believe)
the first few notes from the guitar solo - if anybody knows
it in it's entirety, please post:

          bend up 1 whole step
 (left over | | | | |
 C#5 chord) | | | |E5 |
e|----------^-^-^-|^-----^---------|
B|---------/7-7-7-|7\7-5-----------|
G|----------------|------6~\6--4---|
D|----------------|----------------|
A|----------------|----------------|
E|----------------|----------------|
  1 2 3 + 4 + 1 2 + 3 + 4 +
       ...sofeedme
          + 4 +

At the END, the C#5 gets held out and the lead guitar digital
delay time is turned way down (smaller) and the effect is turned
up. Cool stuff.

Have fun. Jeff
As always, corrections/additions welcome.
