(E) Well I was three days short of pullin out Bridgeport
I was (A) headed down to Houston town

So I (A) pulled up to a neon sign on (E) highway forty-nine
Shut the (A) engine down, took a look around and (B) then I stepped inside

(E) Well I saw old Bill sittin at the bar 
With a (A) waitress and change machine
He was (E) dolin out quarters to a waitress names Starr
When I (F#) asked him if I could (B) sing
He said, (E) son go ahead if you brought your guitar
Then he (A) pointed to the back stage door
He said, (E) we don't like original material
Un (B) less its been done be (E) fore

Well I (A) hit the stage like a big wheeled train 
Told the (E) crowd I played the seats
I played the (A) Tennessee Waltz, Kentucky Rain  
And the (B) one about the pearly street
That ((E) lead guitar was like a chain saw that (A) fiddle like a power drill 
at Bill's

(E) Well in the few short minutes I was up on stage 
Lookin (A) back at country cowboys face
With a (E) perfect view I was witness to
The des (F#) truction of the whole damn (B) place
It was (E) long necked hims and white fringed hems
Flyin (A) out of that dodge saloon
And that me  (E) chanical bull was a Houston pull
To the (B) safest place in the (E) room

Well a (A) punch-drunk cowboy showed his wife  
That his (E) shirt was soaked in beer
She said, (A) calm down honey have another lite 
Cause we can (B) wash the shirt right here
Then the (E) whole place stopped to thank me for (A)bookin my show at Bill's
